The Hollies School is very effective in meeting the wide-ranging special educational needs of its pupils. It has been very successful in developing staff skills and expertise to match the changing needs of the pupils with many now having significantly complex and challenging needs within the spectrum of autistic disorders.
All pupils, regardless of age, gender or special needs, are successful in achieving the learning targets set for them in their IEPs and within the planned learning programmes for each curriculum subject. Many pupils make outstanding progress in their communication skills. This includes the use of symbols and electronic communication aids by those pupils who are unable or reluctant to use speech.
The consistently good quality of teaching throughout the school, across the age groups and the subjects of the curriculum, is outstanding. Teaching and support staff have good skills and expertise in meeting the diverse special educational needs of pupils’.
The quality of care, support and guidance of pupils is excellent with very good collaboration between staff and the nurses and the therapeutic services that are based in the school. Together they deliver a quality of support for individual needs that is outstanding. All staff know pupils very well, regularly monitor performance and have high but realistic expectations of pupils.
Outstandingly, not only are pupils’ physical difficulties and/or autistic spectrum disorders clearly diagnosed but also any additional learning needs they may have are identified. The skilled school staff, with the support of the involved other professionals, ensure that the range of pupils’ needs is met.
Termly reviews of IEPs and Annual Reviews of pupils’ Statements are carried out in line with the SEN Code of Practice and are a strong foundation for promoting progress. All pupils, regardless of age, gender or special needs, are successful in achieving the learning targets set for them in their IEPs and within the planned learning programmes for each curriculum subject.
